Full plot (contains spoilers)

Volpone is an adventurer who has no qualms about swindling people. After making off with the loot from a Tuscan palace, he meets Mosca while fleeing—a fast-talking huckster and inveterate liar—and takes him into his service. Once in Naples, Volpone settles into a sumptuous palace and spreads the rumor that, on his deathbed and with no heir, he intends to leave his fortune to the poor. Greedy figures—the notary Grapione, the moneylender Secco, and the wealthy merchant Corbaccio—immediately draw close to him, hoping to secure the inheritance. Mosca knows how to persuade them to give increasingly lavish gifts to the dying man, even offering him young bodies, so that he will include them in his will.
