The story

As SED rule in East Germany nears its end in late autumn 1989, Saskia Starke faces danger from both sides of her double life. She works publicly at the American mission in West Berlin and unofficially for the CIA, while also spying for the Stasi. When East German citizens storm the agency’s headquarters, Saskia tries to prevent her Stasi file from revealing her past. Markus Wolf warns that his organization can no longer protect her, while her CIA superior Jeremy Redman begins searching for a mole and suspects her. At home, Saskia’s husband Richard starts questioning whether she has been honest with him, adding personal pressure to her effort to stay hidden.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Double agent Saskia Starke finds herself in danger as the end of SED rule in East Germany appears imminent in late autumn 1989. On the surface, she works at the American mission in West Berlin, but unofficially she works for the CIA. She is married to an American, with whom she has two children, and at the same time spies for the Stasi as an agent of its Main Directorate A. When the agency’s headquarters is stormed by East German citizens, she tries to make her file disappear so that no one will learn about her work for the Stasi. Her only chance is to get access to the sought-after documents from the staff in the archive there. Markus Wolf tells her that his organization can no longer protect her. Only the KGB can do that, and she would have to defect to it if she wants to be safe from the Americans. Saskia, however, wants to keep trying to get hold of her file. Meanwhile, Jeremy Redman, Saskia’s superior at the CIA, is searching for a mole in the organization. On the basis of several clues, he suspects Saskia. To make sure, he wants to persuade Saskia’s husband, Richard, to confirm his suspicions. Richard is confused and first wants to find out for himself whether his wife is keeping secrets from him. He secretly searches through her belongings and drives to Kürnach, where she supposedly grew up. In the process, it becomes clear to him that Saskia has quite obviously not told him the truth about her past. He confronts her, since he is now no longer even sure that she married him for love, rather than because he might have been merely a means to an end for her. Saskia makes it unmistakably clear to Richard that she loves him and their children more than anything. The next day, her colleague Colin Sanders catches Saskia removing her name from documents delivered to the CIA by a Stasi officer who has defected. But she unexpectedly gets support and help from her colleague Betsy Jordan, who reveals herself to be a KGB agent and shoots Sanders. They both promise to keep each other’s secrets and present Sanders as the mole they were looking for. The plan works, and Jeremy Redman apologizes to Saskia.
