The story
In Alpsee, a small Tyrolean village, Dorle works as a nurse at Marianne Klockenhoff’s children’s home. She is courted by both the carefree Franzl and the cheerful Mr. Lenz, but Franzl repeatedly gives her reason to doubt his love. He wants to leave the village for the big city, work in the hotel trade he trained for, and eventually become a hotel director. There, he meets Beate Klockenhoff, who is preparing to divorce her husband and hopes to help Franzl find hotel work. Beate plans to place her eight-year-old daughter, Christine, temporarily in Marianne’s care. At the village’s grand Rose Festival, Franzl competes alongside Beate against Dorle and Mr. Lenz.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In Alpsee, a small village in the mountains of Tyrol, Marianne Klockenhoff runs a children’s home. Dorle works there as a nurse. Two men from the village court the young woman: the carefree Franzl and the cheerful Mr. Lenz. Franzl repeatedly gives Dorle reason to doubt his love for her. He would much rather leave the village and work in the big city in the hotel trade, the profession he trained for, with the aim of eventually becoming a hotel director. In the city, he happens to meet Beate Klockenhoff and her daughter, Christine. Beate, who wants to divorce her husband Philipp, gets along well with Franzl and hopes to help him find a job at a hotel in Baden-Baden. As she prepares to divorce her husband, Beate wants to place eight-year-old Christine temporarily in the children’s home in Alpsee run by her sister-in-law Marianne. At the grand Rose Festival, Franzl competes alongside Beate against Dorle and Mr. Lenz. With a trick, Franzl manages to make Beate the Rose Queen. They celebrate afterward at the inn run by Franzl’s aunt, the Schneiderwirtin. At the same time, Christine, having learned from her mother that she will live apart from her father in the future, sets off hopefully into the mountains. Dorle has told her that wishes come true if you pick an alpine rose. Christine longs with all her heart for a life with both her father and mother. When they realize Christine has disappeared from the home, a search party led by Franzl sets out to find her. At the same time, her father Philipp is also on his way to the mountains of Tyrol, longing for his daughter. Accompanied by Christine’s dog, which has picked up her trail, he hurries into the mountains. The dog finds Christine, who has fallen from a cliff. Franzl and his search party have also reached the accident site, and he is lowered by rope to rescue the girl. After he succeeds, a stone strikes him on the head as he is being hauled back up, knocking him unconscious. Christine’s daring adventure does at least have one good result: her parents realize that they belong together, and Franzl now knows that he belongs with Dorle. Then his aunt, the landlady of the Alpenhof inn, tells him that she plans to hand over its management to him, and the young couple’s happiness is complete.
