Full plot (contains spoilers)
In Terlan, South Tyrol, the tenant farmer Perner is struggling with debt. His granddaughter Eva, who helps out on the estate with her little brother Loisl, is courted by Franz, the baron's son, but she does not love him. Before the debts force her to marry Franz, Loisl and Eva's best friend Mariele look for a way out: Mariele places a personal ad seeking a husband for Eva. The ad is read by Gustav Mummelmann, an unsuccessful mousetrap maker, who assumes Eva is the baron's daughter and, driven by his own financial worries, replies to the ad. To improve his chances, he encloses not his own photograph, but one of his nephew Peter. Peter is a record producer who is fed up with his clingy girlfriend Marion-Madeleine, who leads a band of young women that the dancing twins Li and Lo would also like to join. Mariele invites Gustav to Meran, and he plans to borrow money from Peter, claiming he has to meet business associates in South Tyrol. Peter abruptly decides to travel to South Tyrol with his uncle to get away from the chaos with Marion-Madeleine. On the way, Gustav sends a telegram to Marion-Madeleine in Peter's name, telling her to come to Meran as soon as possible. He hopes this will stop Peter from seeing through his scheme. In Meran, Peter runs into Eva by chance; Gustav, meanwhile, mistakes Mariele for Eva and falls in love with her. Eva and Peter also hit it off at first. Peter soon encounters Marion-Madeleine and her girls at the hotel, then moves in with Eva at the winery. Marion-Madeleine, for her part, soon loses interest in Peter after meeting Franz, who plays the drums, and falling in love with him. Franz is delighted, too, to have finally found a woman who loves music. But the deception involving Gustav and Franz soon comes to light. Eva thinks Peter has been secretly meeting Mariele, because she finds Gustav's letter with Peter's photograph at Mariele's. She turns away from Peter, while Mariele throws Gustav out when she realizes that he is not a wealthy man at all and has been lying to her the whole time. Peter eventually explains the true circumstances to Mariele, and she and Gustav reconcile. The village's big wine festival begins. By tradition, the elected wine queen gets to choose a man whom she must marry. Peter has written Eva a letter explaining all the misunderstandings. So, just before the election, Eva and Franz admit to each other that they are actually in love with other people. Peter misinterprets their friendly embrace and leaves. When Eva is elected wine queen, she wants to choose Peter, but he is no longer there. Loisl drives after him in the fire engine and brings him back. The couples reunite, especially since Franz also introduces Marion-Madeleine to his father as his future bride. In the end, there is a triple wedding: Franz and Marion-Madeleine, Eva and Peter, and Gustav and Mariele get married.
