The story

In Hüttenberg, a former mining community in Carinthia, the 16-year-old daughter of state parliament member Alois Prantl is found dead in the shaft of a disused mine after joining the local Reiftanz celebrations. Station commander Hannes Muck, a quiet and reserved policeman who has known crime only from television, initially suspects an accident, though he finds a trail of blood in the woods. Chief Inspector Heinrich Plöschberger is tasked with solving the case. Muck suspects one of the petty criminals from a neighboring village’s youth home, while the pathologist believes the killer knew about the open shaft and could be someone from the village. As Muck investigates, he realizes his friendships are being tested.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the former mining community of Hüttenberg in Carinthia, the 16-year-old daughter of state parliament member Alois Prantl is found dead in the shaft of a disused mine. She is wearing her white festive dress, having earlier joined in the celebrations surrounding the Hüttenberg Reiftanz. The quiet, reserved station commander Hannes Muck, who has known crime only from television until now, initially suspects an accident, despite finding a trail of blood in the woods. An autopsy is performed in the state capital, Klagenfurt. Shortly afterward, the shy, friendly provincial policeman Muck finds himself dealing with the stern, cynical Chief Inspector Heinrich Plöschberger, who is tasked with solving the case. Muck suspects the culprit may be one of the petty criminals from the youth home in a neighboring village. The pathologist from Klagenfurt believes the culprit must have known about the open shaft, and that the murderer could be someone from the village. It soon becomes clear to Station Commander Muck that all his friendships are being put to the test. Good-natured Muck has to put up with the reactions to the provocations involving suspects and witnesses that Chief Inspector Plöschberger dishes out, and is eventually even beaten up by three masked men. One night, the Hüttenberg community believes it knows who the culprit is. Muck does stand up to the marching mob, earning points with Susanne, the director of the youth home, with whom he is secretly in love. However, under the influence of state parliament member Prantl, he loses his post for the time being. The case is eventually solved after all, when Muck, who continues investigating despite his suspension, finds the crucial clue: Prantl himself had beaten his daughter to death in a fit of rage because she had discovered his secret homosexuality and wanted to make it public. Although Plöschberger thinks Muck’s suspension will surely be rendered moot by this, Muck decides to travel for a while with a backpack and says goodbye to Susanne. The two kiss.
