A bored screenwriter acts out the kind of exciting story he usually writes, only to find that his wife’s return complicates his escapades.
The story
Screenwriter Olaf is absorbed in a new manuscript, leaving his wife Julia, a doctor, with little attention. She is eager to travel, and when she leaves, Olaf finds himself alone and increasingly bored. He decides to experience in real life the sort of exciting story he normally puts on paper, taking advantage of his temporary freedom through a series of escapades. Julia returns earlier than expected and is displeased by what she suspects her husband has been doing. In response, she openly flirts with Jack, an acquaintance she met on her trip, setting off a chain of suspicions and misunderstandings between the couple.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Olaf works as a screenwriter and is currently poring over a new manuscript, which means his wife, Julia, a doctor, is about to get rather little attention from him. The young blonde doesn’t mind at all, since she is eager to set off on a trip. But left home alone as a temporary bachelor, the writer soon gets quite bored, so Olaf decides to experience for himself what he usually commits to paper as an exciting story: live, in full color, and above all, for real. So why not let loose for once and take advantage of his newly acquired freedom? His “wild” lifestyle includes a number of more or less harmless escapades, which Julia—who, in keeping with the conventions of this film genre, returns earlier than expected—does not find amusing at all. She soon suspects that her husband has committed serious (erotic) transgressions, and decides to get even by openly flirting with Jack, an acquaintance she made on her trip. What she doesn’t know, however, is that on the night Julia thought Olaf had been with the call girl Nelly, he was actually behind bars. Various further misunderstandings follow, until they are cleared up in the tumultuous finale and the lovers find their way back to each other.
