A Shared Room is a story set in Warsaw in the 1930s, centered on Lucjan Salis, a young, promising poet who, after returning from tuberculosis treatment in Zakopane, moves in as a lodger in a crowded room in a Warsaw tenement building. Sharing the space with other young intellectuals, including the writer Zygmunt Stukonis, the eccentric “Grandpa,” and students, Lucjan is drawn into an artistic bohemian milieu that, despite its intellectual aspirations, sinks into stagnation, alcohol, and idleness. The characters cannot find their place in interwar Polish society. Unemployment, poverty, and pessimism prevail among them, leading to various tragedies: a law student commits suicide after failing an exam, Zygmunt loses hope of literary success, and Lucjan himself ultimately loses his battle with a recurrence of tuberculosis and dies without realizing his creative ambitions.
