The story
During the making of an unnamed film, its lead actor fails to appear on set. Director Andrzej, unaware of the reason, films himself making a daring leap onto a train, while the actor’s wife, Ela, and Andrzej’s wife, Beata, join him in trying to find the missing man. After the day’s shoot, a party brings another strain: the guests humiliate Ela. Irritated and lonely, she dances energetically by herself, then tells Andrzej she feels alone and wants people to love her.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
During the making of an unspecified film, the Actor, who was supposed to play the lead role, fails to show up on set. The director, named Andrzej, still unaware that the Actor has died, films a scene in which he appears himself, performing a daring leap onto a train. Ela—the Actor’s wife—and Beata—Andrzej’s wife—try to find him. Along with Andrzej, they wonder where the Actor might be. After the day’s shoot, a party is held, during which Ela is humiliated by the guests. She dances energetically, irritated and alone. When she leaves the party, she talks with Andrzej about feeling lonely and wanting people to love her. After some of the intoxicated guests climb onto a carousel, Ela takes symbolic revenge on them by starting the motor and watching them go round and round, unable to get off. As Beata and Ela are driving and exchanging memories of the Actor, they suddenly hear a radio announcement about his tragic death. Silence falls. The women get out at the scene and run along the railway tracks, where they see police officers inspecting the site of the fatal accident. After the funeral, Andrzej talks with the deceased man’s friends: Bobek and Daniel, a promising actor, whom he offers the lead role intended for the Actor. Daniel is given a cup that had been a keepsake of the deceased, as well as his legendary jacket. Already on the film set, Daniel spots a herd of horses galloping past. On impulse, he runs off the set after them. The director then asks one of his assistants, Witek, to try immediately to capture the fleeing Daniel in the frame.
