Mr. Stephanus, a renowned doctor and professor of cardiology in Budapest, has been forced into retirement against his will. Still wanting to continue working as a doctor, he returns to his home village and takes over the vacant family doctor’s practice there. In the village, he meets his old childhood sweetheart again, as well as a friend from his youth, Father Kristof, who serves the community as its priest. He soon notices that envy and resentment are flourishing in the impoverished village, and that the corrupt mayor pulls all the strings. The mayor wants to turn the village into an elegant spa resort and, in pursuing his plan, does not shy away from lies, intrigues, pressure, and slander. Stephanus has reservations about the plan, but as a famous doctor from the capital, he is met with a wave of aversion and hostility. Only the priest becomes a confidant with whom he can talk about the village’s tensions and intrigues, into which he has unexpectedly been drawn.
