A sixteen-year-old girl’s crush on a mining-survey worker goes unnoticed amid his affairs—until they bring trouble to the inn where he is staying.

The story

Martin runs an inn with his sixteen-year-old daughter, Božka, where a team of workers conducting a nearby mining survey is staying. Božka has fallen for Gába, one of the workers, but he barely notices her, distracted by his temporary affairs in the nearby town. When three men, apparently betrayed husbands who have discovered those affairs, arrive at the inn and attack Gába, the ensuing brawl damages the furnishings. Martin has little choice but to eject Gába temporarily. Božka helps and supports him, and Gába seems to begin taking an interest in her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Martin runs an inn with his sixteen-year-old daughter, Božka, where a team of workers carrying out a mining survey nearby is staying. Božka has fallen for one of them, Gába, who fails to notice the girl’s attentions, partly because he is constantly involved in “illicit” and temporary love affairs in the nearby town. One day, three men—apparently betrayed husbands who have discovered Gába’s affairs—turn up at the inn and attack him, damaging some of the furnishings in the ensuing brawl. Martin has no choice but to throw Gába out of his inn, at least temporarily. It is only when Gába realizes on this occasion that Božka is helping and supporting him that he seems to take an interest in the young woman. And, indeed, a tentative first approach develops between them. Gába later tries to get close to the young woman again, probably thinking he can treat her the same way he has treated his previous mistresses; but Božka, whose feelings are of a different kind, turns him down. Other boys, closer to Božka in age, are her friends and perhaps admirers. When Gába sees one of them dancing with her at a party, he seems to decide to give up his attempts to approach the innkeeper’s daughter and resumes his habitual fleeting affairs. One evening, however, Božka unexpectedly appears in Gába’s room. Taken by surprise and inclined to be disillusioned, Gába simply sends her out. The next morning, when Gába wakes up, he notices that Martin and the inn’s occupants are gone: they have all gone to the station to say goodbye to Božka, who is leaving for Prague to study. Gába hurries to the station, but arrives too late: the train has left—or, in other words, Gába has missed the train.
