In a Westerwald village, a young woman and her grandmother live under the shadow of a dream that foretells a death.
The story
Twenty-two-year-old Luise lives with her grandmother Selma in a village in the Westerwald. Selma has a disturbing gift: whenever she dreams of an okapi, someone from the village dies soon afterward, though no one knows who it will be. Once the dream is known, the villagers grow afraid and act on impulses they might otherwise suppress, or confess secrets. Around Luise and Selma, private tensions surface: the village optician is secretly in love with Selma, while Luise’s mother, Astrid, runs a flower shop and is having an affair with the owner of the ice cream café. Luise, shaped by a childhood trauma, fears that more tragic events may follow.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film tells the story of Luise and her grandmother across three intertwined timelines. Twenty-two-year-old Luise lives with her grandmother Selma in a village in the Westerwald. Her grandmother has the gift of foreseeing death: whenever she dreams of an okapi, someone from the village dies soon afterward. It is unclear who it will be, however, so after the announcement everyone becomes afraid and ventures to do things they would not otherwise have done, or confesses secrets. The optician is secretly in love with Selma, and is tormented by inner voices that mockingly comment on his thoughts and actions. Astrid, Luise’s mother, runs a flower shop and is having an affair with the owner of the ice cream café. Luise, who recalls many experiences with her childhood friend, has feared further tragic events ever since a childhood trauma. For whenever she says something she does not truly believe herself, something falls down somewhere.
