A nephew races to fulfill a will’s marriage stipulation as a perpetually moving lift turns the pursuit into comic chaos.

The story

A nephew faces a will stipulation requiring him to marry off two nieces within thirty days, prompting him to create an increasingly complicated chain of situations. A perpetually moving paternoster lift adds to the confusion, mixing up people and floors. The supposed nieces are actually two young women, while a sympathetic maid and a jolly uncle round out the comic entanglements. The film frames the predicament as a thirty-day madcap chase, compressed into a brisk half-hour.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The farce “Second Door on the Left” is performed humorously by Hanni Weisse and Fritz Spira. A substantial part of the action revolves around a paternoster lift, whose ceaseless motion causes mix-ups between floors and among the people. In response to a stipulation in a will that he marry off two nieces within thirty days, the nephew brings about the most complicated situations. Of course, the nieces are not the real ones but two young ladies who lend the film a certain nightlife atmosphere and piquant boudoir intimacies. A sympathetic maid and a jolly uncle complete the humorous chaos, which plays out thirty days of a madcap chase in 30 minutes.
