Two estranged brothers revive their teenage plan for a slow moped journey after their father's death brings them back together.

The story

Rocco, a shy man, and Guido, his boisterous brother, have been estranged for years since Guido left home to travel as a holiday entertainer. Their father Corrado’s death reunites them, and a letter he left for Guido asks that his ashes be scattered on his ex-wife’s grave in Cervia. Though Guido had planned to leave again after the funeral, the message changes his mind. The brothers revive their old teenage plan and set off on their mopeds, which can travel no faster than 50 kilometers per hour. Crossing Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, the journey gives them time to talk, joke, and confront the distance between them.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The shy Rocco and the boisterous Guido are brothers who haven’t spoken to each other for years, ever since Guido left home, abandoning his family to travel the world as a holiday entertainer. But the death of Corrado, their resentful father, forces them to reunite to fulfill their father’s last wishes: he left Guido a letter in which he forgives him and asks him to scatter his ashes on his ex-wife’s grave in Cervia. Guido, who had intended to leave again immediately after the funeral, is shaken by what he reads and decides to do as his father asked. Together, he and Rocco decide to revive their teenage plan to take a trip together, along with their old mopeds, a Piaggio Ciao and an Atala Califfone. Thus begins a long journey through Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, riding their mopeds, which can go no faster than 50 kilometers per hour. The brothers get a chance to talk, joke, get angry, clear the air, and spend some time together. After various adventures, the two men end up at a rave where all kinds of drugs are being used. During a nighttime trip, Rocco, angry with his father and convinced he can see his ghost, scatters his ashes over the hills, then secretly replaces them with barbecue coals. That same evening, Guido confesses that he has a son he has never met, conceived during a fling with a woman from Milan. Rocco urges his brother to make amends, so they travel to the Lombard capital. The two track down the young man, Luca, and, using an excuse, join him and his friends for a soccer match. Afterward, they set off again on their mission. There is time for one more mishap before they reach their destination: some bullies win Rocco and Guido’s mopeds in a ping-pong game, and the two make a chaotic attempt to get them back. During the escape, they lose one of the vehicles, and so arrive in Cervia on a single moped. After Corrado’s last wish is finally fulfilled, the two men say goodbye. But Guido, having arrived at the station to resume his work, changes his mind and rushes to his son, who understands everything when he sees him at the door. In a flashback, we learn that Guido did not read Corrado’s real letter, which was full of hatred and resentment toward him and his mother, but rather another message written expressly by Rocco to stir his pride and thereby make their famous planned trip happen together.
