Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the height of the summer season in Viareggio, the aging Marcello, a fallen nobleman and fashion model, is no longer considered fit to model youthful clothes by his partner and employer, Alba. Out of spite, he courts the very young Foschina, who returns his affections; she is the sister of his friend Manolo, whom he happens to run into again on the Riviera. Manolo, a swimming instructor and a seducer of the foreign tourists who throng the beaches of Versilia, unsuccessfully tries to organize an aerial advertising stunt with the help of his friend, the pilot Cittelli. On the seafront, Yvonne works as a traveling sweets vendor and seduces Francisco, an unsuccessful cyclist who eventually stays with her. Manolo has another sister, Selena, who is engaged to Nardoni, a rigid military man who, despite himself, is attracted to the French dancer Gigì, whom he believes to be a drag performer. Frightened by the situation, Nardoni eventually decides to get married, only to discover that Gigì is actually a woman. Foschina returns to her fiancé after discovering Marcello’s profession; Marcello has gone back to Alba, who had threatened to fire him. All the stories find, in their own way, a happy ending.
