Full plot (contains spoilers)
After her divorce, Hanne moves with her son Niels into a rural commune with her old friend Peter. The commune is peacefully demonstrating against the Brokdorf nuclear power plant. Niels befriends the mayor’s daughter and Rakete, who is a little slow, while having considerable differences with Peter, a committed pacifist. Everything falls apart when, on April 29, 1986—the day the fictional character Bobby Ewing dies in Dallas—the news reports the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. While villagers install protective measures against the radioactive fallout expected to arrive from the east—for example, plastic sheeting over windows and garden beds—Peter increasingly comes into conflict with himself and his surroundings, and eventually leaves the commune for Portugal. Hanne reconnects with her son, who has decided to join the Bundeswehr. In the period that follows, Bobby Ewing returns to the series Dallas, and the Brokdorf nuclear power plant goes online; however, other planned nuclear power plants along the Lower Elbe are not built.
