A film examines the barriers children with disabilities face while efforts are made to include them in society.
The story
The film explores the challenges children with disabilities encounter in the Federal Republic of Germany, where efforts are being made to include them in society. Some children live with families rather than in special institutions and attend mainstream schools, yet significant problems remain. Shortcomings in infrastructure and persistent social stereotypes make it difficult for them to become full members of society. The issue is explored through a residential complex in Munich where families with children with disabilities live near one another, with attitudes toward people with disabilities in California offered as a comparison.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film explores the difficulties faced by children with disabilities in the Federal Republic of Germany. Although certain steps are being taken to include these children in society—such as having them live with families rather than in special institutions and attend mainstream schools—many problems remain unresolved, making it difficult for children with disabilities to become full members of society. These include shortcomings in infrastructure and the prevalence of certain stereotypes in society. The issue is examined through the example of a residential complex in Munich where families with children with disabilities live close together. Attitudes toward people with disabilities in California are shown for comparison.
