Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sixtine, a cheerful, somewhat dreamy and very devout young woman, falls in love with Pierre-Louis, a charming, energetic young man she met on a beach in northern France. He is very devout too, and they marry in a lavish traditional Catholic ceremony. But she gradually discovers that her wealthy in-laws are xenophobic and sexist, and that her husband, Pierre-Louis Sue de La Garde, belongs to a hardline Catholic group. She finds herself trapped in a cult that insidiously forces her to cut ties with her past and remain silent in the face of a husband who turns out to be violent, and whose militant activities grow increasingly brutal. Her husband dies in circumstances that remain unclear. His family treats him as an object of veneration. Sixtine, now a young widow and pregnant, falls prey to her mother-in-law, who isolates her from the outside world under the pretext of protecting her. When the young woman realizes that her mother-in-law is trying to separate her from her baby, she decides to run away. She settles in a village under a new identity. She wins the sympathy of Lydie, the hairdresser, a single mother like herself, and the goodwill of the local priest. Sixtine slowly begins to live again. Her kindness wins over the declining parish community—she brings the choir back to life! But one day the cult finds her, kidnaps her and her little boy; with great composure, she manages to escape. But to be rid of them for good, she must find the courage to confront them face-to-face. Supported by the few friends she has made in the village, she decides to file a complaint.
