The story

Six-year-old Tim Hering meets an old bearded man searching the streets for Beutolomäus, the sack that holds all of Santa Claus’s presents. Tim realizes the man must be Santa, but his 11-year-old sister Lili no longer believes in him. Remembering that he overheard something about Beutolomäus being kidnapped at a tailor’s workshop, Tim sets off there with Lili. Though she doubts Santa is real, Lili does not want to miss an exciting adventure. Without Beutolomäus, Santa cannot deliver the children’s presents.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Six-year-old Tim Hering meets an old bearded man who is walking through the streets looking for his sack, which is called Beutolomäus. He addresses adults and older children, such as his 11-year-old sister Lili, without using their names, but immediately knows the names of all the children he asks. Beutolomäus is Santa Claus’s one true sack. All the presents for the children fit inside him, so Santa can’t deliver the presents without him. Tim quickly realizes that this man can only be Santa Claus, while Lili no longer believes in Santa. When Tim thinks it over carefully, he remembers overhearing something about Beutolomäus being kidnapped at a tailor’s workshop. So he and Lili set off for the workshop. Although she no longer believes in Santa, she doesn’t want to miss out on an exciting adventure. Meanwhile, the kidnappers, Pickel and Matzke, take Beutolomäus to their employer, Baron Raffelberg. The children manage to find clues to Beutolomäus’s whereabouts and meet up with Santa again. Together, they set off for the Baron’s. As Tim initially discovers to his disappointment, Santa can’t really do magic; otherwise, he could simply magic Beutolomäus back. But he can do a little “Christmas magic,” such as opening magic doors that lead straight to Santa’s house. This convinces Lili, and she starts believing in Santa again. Baron Raffelberg had Beutolomäus kidnapped because he collects magical objects from throughout history, such as the Holy Grail and the Cornucopia. Only Beutolomäus, Santa Claus’s one true sack, is still missing from his collection. With the children’s help, Santa manages to free Beutolomäus, and the Count and the kidnappers are brought to justice. Tim’s wish to Santa is granted, too. He had wished for his father to celebrate Christmas with them. The Herings are divorced, but when the children went missing, they searched for them together. Their shared concern for the children brought the parents closer again, so the father now spends Christmas with the children and his wife.
