A beloved sister returning from Libya faces an uneasy contrast in Annibale, a penniless communist occupying a hospital bed without authorization.
The story
After many years in Libya, Sister Germana returns to Italy and moves to a hospital in Lombardy, where patients consider her a true friend. Annibale Pezzi stands apart: penniless and without a home, he occupies a ward bed without authorization. At first, Germana and Annibale seem to have no way of starting a conversation.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After spending many years in Libya, Sister Germana returns to Italy and moves to a hospital in Lombardy. All the patients there love her and consider her a true friend, with the exception of Annibale Pezzi, a penniless communist who is occupying a ward bed without authorization because he has nowhere to go. At first, it seems that Sister Germana and Annibale have no way of striking up a conversation, but little by little, despite their differing political and social views, Annibale and Germana fall in love with each other. After leaving the hospital, Annibale is admitted again after being seriously injured during a trade union demonstration, and dies there with Sister Germana by his side.
