The story
Frangipani, daughter of Willi, a retired Berlin cinema owner, marries Friedrich and spends their honeymoon with him in Italy, where problems arise between them. A year later, they have a daughter and are at odds. Frangipani is responsible for the household, while Friedrich faces professional difficulties.

Frangipani is the daughter of Willi, a retired Berlin cinema owner. She marries Friedrich and spends her honeymoon with him in Italy. Problems between them arise even during the trip. A year later, Frangipani and Friedrich, who have since had a daughter, are at odds. Frangipani is responsible for the household, and Friedrich is having professional difficulties. Another year later, Frangipani has a detective keep her husband under surveillance and learns that he is cheating on her. At first, Frangipani and Friedrich quarrel, but when Willi is dying, he urges the two of them to reconcile. Frangipani also cheats on Friedrich with a one-night stand, and afterward she considers them even.
