Frida has lived in Paris since she was ten and has kept few ties with Estonia or its émigrés in France. Though reluctant, Anne accepts the position and leaves Estonia. Full plot (contains spoilers)
Anne lives in Estonia, where she cares for her mother. When her mother dies, Anne is offered a job as caregiver to Frida, a wealthy Parisian. Despite her reluctance, she accepts and leaves. Frida is the daughter of Estonian parents, but she has lived in Paris since the age of ten and has maintained few ties with her country of origin or with her fellow émigrés in France. Relations between the two women are not easy. Although Anne shows goodwill in trying to help Frida, Madame does not seem to appreciate her efforts and, apart from a few moments of trust, continues to complain about her. Frida’s only friend is Stéphane, her former lover, who is much younger than she is and to whom she gave the bar that had belonged to her husband. The entire film revolves around a comparison between two kinds of loneliness: that of the elderly woman, still in command of herself, intelligent, now wise, and, as ever, authoritarian and capricious; and that of the middle-aged provincial woman, strong-willed, devoted, and boring. Each of them discovers that she now needs the other.
