Full plot (contains spoilers)
In a working-class neighborhood in a city in northern France, Jacques, known as “Jacco,” and his inseparable friend Frédéric, known as “Freddie,” two idle men of about 25, live off their families. They spend their time going on outings and playing mean pranks, and hang around the bistro run by Magda, a woman in her forties and Jacco’s mistress. Generous and kind-hearted, she often helps them out financially. But trouble is about to fill the previously idle days of the two friends when Jacco, after seducing a woman in her forties, abandons her to pursue a perfect romance with her daughter, Lise. Hurt and humiliated, the mother uses every trick she can to break up the young couple. Devastated by his breakup with Lise and by the sudden disappearance of Freddie, who has killed himself, Jacco finds comfort in the arms of the kindly Magda.
