Full plot (contains spoilers)
A married couple lives in a German suburb with their son, Achim, and their daughter Katrin, who is about a year old. In the drab routine of everyday life, they all live past one another. Achim’s parents go to a company party with their neighbors, the Behms. Their daughter Monika, who has just entered her teens, is supposed to look after the children in the meantime. Monika reluctantly accepts her role, but when her secret boyfriend Otto drops by, she leaves Achim and his sister alone. At first, Achim plays listlessly with the fussy toddler, then pulls a plastic bag over her head. He takes his apparently suffocated sister in a handcart to a scrapyard and hides her in the trunk of an old car. When he returns, the search for the child begins. Achim and Monika are questioned by detectives, but both claim to know nothing. Suspicion falls on Monika’s boyfriend because his car was seen nearby, and he is taken into pretrial detention. As the contradictions between Achim’s and Monika’s lies become increasingly obvious, Achim’s father is the first to guess what happened. He finds the body in the car’s trunk, takes it away, and disposes of it for good in the machinery at his workplace. After that, life at home apparently goes on as though nothing had happened.
