The story
While flirting with his assistant beside a canal in Aix-en-Provence, indebted art dealer Christian Lespinglet rescues a homeless man who is trying to drown himself. Christian takes the man into his home, where he lives with his wife, whose life has been rather monotonous. The rescue brings an unexpected guest into their household, and the man soon becomes a nuisance, disrupting the couple’s established routine.

While flirting with his assistant by the canal in Aix-en-Provence, Christian Lespinglet (Gérard Jugnot), an art dealer who is nevertheless heavily in debt, saves the life of a homeless man (Gérard Depardieu) who is trying to drown himself. Taken in by Lespinglet and his wife, whose life had been rather monotonous, the man soon becomes a nuisance and disrupts their lives.
