The story
At a ceremony honoring television gourmet-show host Ernst Stadler, his brother Ludwig delivers the speech, while their younger brother Adrian attends despite the recent death of his former partner. In a crisis of meaning, Adrian seeks a solution by making a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Ludwig believes Adrian may intend to take his own life at the journey’s end in Finisterre. Though in very poor health, Ludwig joins him without being asked, hoping to prevent this and protect his younger brother.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ernst Stadler is honored by the mayor with Vienna’s Golden Cross of Merit for his work as the host of a gourmet show, and his brother Ludwig delivers the laudatory speech. Although the former partner of the youngest brother recently died, Adrian (Scheißerl) is also at the ceremony. He is going through a crisis of meaning and is seeking a solution on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Ludwig (Wickerl) thinks Adrian intends to commit suicide at the end of the journey, in Finisterre (the end of the world). To prevent this and protect his “little” brother, Ludwig, despite being in very poor health, accompanies him without being asked. Then it comes out that Ernst snorted cocaine at the awards ceremony. His show is canceled by the television network. On impulse, he joins his brothers in Spain. Along the way, they meet Arie (Dolf de Vries), a 75-year-old Dutchman from Utrecht. Traveling together, each of them discovers the meaning of the Way of St. James and draws his own lessons from the remainder of the journey. Adrian is fully motivated from the start. Ludwig suffers a circulatory collapse and has to spend several days in the hospital. Ernst soon takes off his white suit, throws away his aluminum suitcase, gets proper gear, and begins to engage seriously with the Way. Through their shared experiences on the journey, the three brothers find their way back to one another and arrive together in Santiago de Compostela.
