A young farmer in eastern Belgium must decide whether to take over his family farm or leave for a new life in the city.
The story
In eastern Belgium’s Herve region, near Fourons, linguistic clashes and a changing agricultural economy form the backdrop to a family’s bereavement. After his father’s death, a young farmer faces a choice: take over the farm as it confronts pressure to industrialize and meet European Economic Community standards, or leave for the city and begin again. His aunt Nicole, a lawyer in Liège, encourages him to consider moving away from the conflicts and problems surrounding the farm. The story follows his difficult decision against a landscape shaped by both social change and personal loss.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In eastern Belgium, in the Herve region, a few kilometres from the municipality of Fourons, caught up in the violence of linguistic clashes, the farming world is undergoing a period of change—industrialize or disappear, adapt to EEC standards or become marginalized. That is the historical landscape. The emotional landscape is just as dramatic: the death of the father. These tragic events will weigh on the life of a young farmer at the same time. Will he take over the farm, or decide to move away to the city and invent a new life for himself, far from these problems and conflicts? Will he leave behind the vast landscape of Alexis, the dead man, as his aunt, the beautiful Nicole Garcia, a lawyer in Liège, suggests?
