After leaving Rome for London amid the political and student protests of 1968, Michele stays connected to the family and friends he left behind through letters.

The story

Apparently caught up in the political and student protests of 1968, Michele flees Rome for London, leaving his sick father behind. He continues to communicate by letter with his mother, sisters and friends. From abroad, he asks them to remove a submachine gun hidden in the basement of his former home and urges them to look after Mara, a young woman he left behind who may be the mother of his child. Michele’s requests, alongside Mara’s presence in their lives, place his family and friends in the position of responding to the unresolved complications he has left behind.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Michele seems to be involved in the political and student protests of 1968, and flees from Rome to London, leaving behind his sick father, who dies in hospital without seeing him again. However, he keeps in touch by letter with his mother, his sisters, and his friends. He also asks them to remove a submachine gun hidden in the basement where he used to live, and urges them to look after Mara, a girl he left behind, though she may be the mother of his child. Both Mara in person and Michele by mail continue to burden them with their own instability. Mara is also extremely intrusive and presumptuous, and keeps taking advantage of the good will of anyone she comes across. Even abroad, Michele seems to keep making reckless moves, such as his sudden marriage to a girl with similar political leanings, whom he has just met and soon abandons. From fragmentary reports, it seems that he eventually takes part in further violent demonstrations in Bruges, during which he dies.
