As his family's financial security collapses, an elite Rio teenager begins to see life beyond his privileged world.
The story
Sônia and Hugo, members of Rio de Janeiro’s upper bourgeoisie, live with their children in Barra da Tijuca. Their financial collapse becomes harder to conceal, and cost-cutting leads them to dismiss Severino, their longtime driver. The crisis begins to disrupt the lives of Jean and Nathalie, although their parents try to hide it. In his final year at the traditional Colégio São Bento, Jean is already seeking distance from his parents. Having to take the bus to school exposes him to problems beyond his family’s dwindling finances. Tensions with his father intensify after Jean meets Luiza, a public-school student outside Rio’s elite, and starts dating her.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sônia (Suzana Pires) and Hugo (Marcello Novaes) are a couple from Rio de Janeiro’s upper bourgeoisie who live in Barra da Tijuca. The family’s financial collapse begins to become apparent when, as part of their cost-cutting, they fire Severino (Gentil Cordeiro), their longtime driver. Gradually, their financial problems begin to directly affect the daily lives of their children, Jean (Thales Cavalcanti) and Nathalie (Alice Melo), even as their parents try to hide the crisis. Jean, a student at Rio de Janeiro’s traditional Colégio São Bento, is in his final year of high school and is increasingly trying to break away from his parents. When he has to take the bus to get to school, he begins to notice the many problems his family is facing beyond their financial ones. His conflicts with his father grow more serious when Jean meets Luiza (Bruna Amaya), a student at the public school Pedro II, and starts dating her. She does not belong to Rio’s elite and represents a side of life Jean is just beginning to discover.
