The story
The widow Erdmann has five sons. Her youngest, Oscar, is a liar, swindler, and thief who squanders his mother’s money. When his four brothers volunteer for military service, Oscar refuses, saying, “It’s too horrifying—I want to live!” During the war, an enemy state recruits him to blow up an ammunition depot, and his mother tries to stop him. This sets up the initial conflict between Oscar’s recruitment and his mother’s opposition.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The widow Erdmann has five sons. Her youngest son, Oscar, is a hopeless case, however. He is a liar, a swindler, and a thief who also squanders his mother’s money. When the other four sons volunteer for military service, he refuses to serve in the armed forces, saying, “It’s too horrifying—I want to live!” During the war, an enemy state recruits him to blow up an ammunition depot. He does not even hesitate to beat his mother brutally when she tries to stop him. A guard then opens fire, and she is seriously wounded and dies. Her children kneel at her deathbed. During the vigil, soldiers pass by the window singing the German national anthem, “German women, German fidelity!” The sons collapse in tears.
