Full plot (contains spoilers)

In [year unspecified], Jérôme and Alice cross the demarcation line and arrive unexpectedly at the home of Jérôme’s old friend, Charles. Charles, a shoe manufacturer and the nephew of a Vichy chief of staff, wants to stay out of the conflict—neither a Resistance member nor a collaborator. Jérôme, by contrast, belongs to a Resistance network and has come to Charles’s home only to arrange the escape of a Jewish family. Because they have arrived in a hurry, Jérôme appeals to their friendship to persuade Charles to take them in for a few days. He also invokes Alice’s lovely eyes: her husband, a Jewish doctor, died at the hands of the Nazis in Vienna four years earlier. The collapse of Jérôme’s Resistance network sets events in motion: he must quickly find a new hiding place for the Jewish family. When he asks Alice to go to Paris to find out more, Charles refuses to let her go alone. Jérôme’s manipulations and the growing German presence in the Free Zone will lead Charles to join the Resistance, while sounding the death knell for the trio’s relationships.
