Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the spring of 1944, at the (fictional) Tatenberg concentration camp, SS officers, as a game, place two prisoners sentenced to death in a special enclosure: a German, Karl, and a French Jew, David. They will spend the night together, but at dawn, whichever of them has had the horrific courage to kill his companion will be pardoned. Karl, deported for ten years, is an important member of the camp’s clandestine anti-Nazi organization. His friends decide to save him. Frantic preparations, interrupted by air-raid alerts, fill this tragic night. The plan is to get Karl out of the enclosure and replace him with a corpse whose face has been disfigured. That way, the SS will believe he was killed by his companion.
