During wartime on Texel, an imaginative young woman finds new possibilities when a regiment of Georgian soldiers arrives.

The story

Marie, an imaginative girl on the flat island of Texel, longs for mountains and a life beyond her community’s strict religious beliefs and narrow expectations. She secretly dances in her room and resists the prospect of marrying Paul, the beachcomber’s son. As the only girl in a large, poor family during wartime, she feels she has little choice. The war deepens existing social divisions, but the arrival of a regiment of Georgian soldiers begins to change her circumstances. Their films, music, unusual survival strategies, and different outlook introduce Marie to possibilities beyond the life she has known.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Marie is a girl with a vivid imagination. On the flat island of Texel, she dreams of mountains and even collects pictures of them. The island community’s strict religious beliefs and narrow way of life suffocate her. In the evenings, she secretly dances to the creaking of two loose floorboards in her room. She would rather do something else with her life than marry Paul, the son of the beachcomber. As the only girl in a large, poor family during wartime, she seems to have little choice. The war also further sharpens the divisions and social positions. Marie tries to survive this reality by dreaming. From the moment a regiment of Georgians is stationed on the island, her life changes and she blossoms completely. With their films and music, but above all their inventive and unusual survival strategies and radically different outlook on life, this isolated group of outsiders—and especially the young soldier Goga—opens a path for Marie. Thanks to them, she becomes someone who realizes all her dreams without fear.
