Two neighboring families share a close friendship, but their sons’ toxic bond threatens to divide them.
The story
The Morell and Wagner families have been close friends and neighbors for years. Their fathers work together selling Swedish prefabricated houses, and the families regularly play Doppelkopf. Despite this familiar closeness, their sons, Robert Morell and Paul Wagner, have a toxic friendship. Paul is older and described as having sadistic tendencies; Robert feels increasingly cornered by him. The growing tension between the boys casts a shadow over the families’ longstanding bond.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The married couples Evchen and Winnie Morell and Sylvie and Jakob Wagner have been close friends for years. The two families are neighbors and usually very busy. The fathers work together in sales for Swedish prefabricated houses. In their spare time, the Morells and the Wagners regularly play Doppelkopf. Although the families seem to know each other so well, a dark chasm opens up between their children: their sons, Robert Morell and Paul Wagner, have a toxic friendship. One day, young Robert feels so cornered by the older neighbor boy Paul, who has sadistic tendencies, that he shoots him dead in the street. Robert’s parents want to cover up their son’s deed and bury Paul’s body as quickly as possible. After all, they do not want to be forced to leave their familiar surroundings or have their son taken away from them. But the Morells become increasingly entangled in contradictions in front of the Wagners, and a race against time begins.
