Commissioner Martin Brühl wakes up one morning in an empty bed. With no sign of his partner Susanne, he immediately fears the worst. Police psychologist Susanne Koch was in the wrong place at the wrong time. On her way home at night from a rendezvous she had kept secret from Martin, she witnessed an ATM being blown up. Susanne was seriously injured in the blast, and the perpetrators then took her with them. Martin’s first suspicion immediately falls on one of Susanne’s former university classmates, who had recently got back in touch with her. The commissioner manages to convince his superior, Mattuschek, that his partner was the victim of a crime, but he is not allowed to work on the case. Martin himself is to blame: he repeatedly loses his nerve and his professional composure. Despite his superior’s doubts, Martin continues investigating and discovers Susanne’s rendezvous. As the case unfolds, the team around Eli Wiesner and Frauke Buhr establishes a connection between Susanne’s disappearance and a series of professionally organized ATM bombings. This leads Commissioner Martin to a terrible suspicion. He also has to contend with competition from LKA officer Laura Krain. Because of her superior rank and her distance from the case, Laura becomes an adversary within Martin’s own ranks.
