A lawyer filling in at a Berlin private school faces mysterious threats against the students in his law club.
The story
Lawyer Joachim Vernau agrees to fill in as instructor for the law club at a private school in Berlin. On his first day, mysterious threats appear against students in his class. The school’s history deepens his unease: its buildings once housed a mental asylum, and a student fell to her death from a window the previous year, leaving what seems like a curse hanging over the school. Then Maximiliane, a club member who wants to quit, suddenly collapses and dies of poisoning. That same day, Vernau receives a message directing him to Kreuzkirche that evening.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lawyer Joachim Vernau is asked by Katharina Oettinger to fill in as an instructor for the law club at a private school in Berlin. Vernau agrees, but mysterious threats against the students in his class appear on the very first day. This worries him, because the school buildings once belonged to a mental asylum, and ever since a student fell to her death from a window last year, her spirit seems to have hung over the school like a kind of curse. Student Maximiliane, who wants to leave the club, suddenly collapses and dies of poisoning. That same day, Vernau receives a message telling him to go to Kreuzkirche that evening. There he witnesses a Black Mass held by the “Nosferatu of Berlin.” He learns that “his” students had also once taken part in the masses, but that it had not been enough for them and they had wanted to “cross the line.” Vernau investigates and finds, in the school’s old rooms, the antique medical records of a mentally ill mass murderer. The woman’s delusions are listed in the file and had evidently become the basis for a grotesque role-playing game played by the class. As a result, Clarissa threw herself out of a window and is now making herself known as the “avenger.” Vernau investigates because he wants to get to the truth. It turns out that Clarissa’s classmates had also experimented with drugs, which ultimately led to her suicide. Now, a year after her death, the entire class was supposed to pay for it. The teenagers accuse one another, and during an argument another student is killed. Vernau, however, suspects Clarissa’s brother Eyk, who was expelled from the school some time ago. Principal Oettinger thinks this is nonsense, but has to learn firsthand just how right Vernau is when Eyk Scharnow suddenly appears with a gun and shoots her. Next, he shoots at one of his former classmates. Vernau manages to draw Eyk into a conversation, allowing the rest of the class to get to safety. When the SEK arrives to end the shooting spree, Eyk shoots himself in the head.
