Full plot (contains spoilers)
Klaus Burg is a busy criminal defense lawyer. His wife died of cancer, and he has little time for his 17-year-old daughter Alina, whom he has sent to boarding school. As a result, their relationship is strained. Hoping to ease tensions, he plans to spend a weekend in the mountains with her. After a loud argument in front of other hotel guests, Alina goes missing. A large quantity of blood is found in her hotel room, so the police suspect Klaus Burg of murdering his daughter. Enzo Battista, a kingpin in organized crime, blackmails Burg: he must lead Battista to Georg Wendt, one of Burg’s clients, or Alina will die. Although Burg does not know where Georg Wendt is, he escapes the criminal police by climbing out over the hotel balcony. Wendt’s daughter Maja helps him search for Georg Wendt and flee through Höllental from the state criminal police officers, including investigators Barbara Leyendecker and Arndt Schubert, as well as Andreas Frey of the Alpine special operations unit. Maja used to work as a mountain guide until one of her clients fell to his death after trying to climb without safety protection. Battista initially demands from Burg the mafia’s business reports and balance sheets from Georg Wendt. Wendt is a police investigator who was investigating the ’Ndrangheta. He is under internal investigation because he is alleged to have prevented a raid on the restaurant of Isabelle Battista, Enzo’s sister-in-law. Wendt had obtained the documents from her. After handing the documents over to Wendt, Isabelle is murdered, and Wendt then flees into the mountains with them. Based on her investigation, Leyendecker now suspects that Burg is being blackmailed, that his daughter has been taken hostage, and that Burg is not fleeing from the police but is searching for his daughter and her kidnapper. Later, Battista also orders Burg to kill Georg Wendt. Burg eventually reaches Wendt at a mountain hut, where Burg shoots him, though Wendt survives. Battista watches the scene through a camera drone; after shooting Wendt, Burg also shoots down the drone. Battista therefore assumes that Burg has carried out the order. Burg sets off for Battista with the requested documents. They meet in a church, where Burg hands over the documents and Battista releases Alina in return. However, Wendt had also uploaded the documents to the cloud. Burg tells Battista that the password will be passed on to the authorities if anything happens to him or his daughter. Burg also decides to enter a witness protection program and start a new life with his daughter under a new identity.
