A new private investigator is drawn into a hospital fugitive’s case and a suspected pharmaceutical conspiracy.
The story
After resigning from the BKA over a disagreement with his superior, Georg Dengler starts work as a private investigator in Stuttgart, hoping to spend more time with his son. His first case sends him to Berlin: university professor Bernhard Voss stands accused of raping a nurse, and Dengler is asked to prove his innocence. The evidence makes Dengler doubt his client, while the involvement of his former boss raises further suspicions. At his lawyer’s urging, Dengler accompanies Voss to a medical appointment under police guard. Voss uses the opportunity to escape, and when Dengler catches up with him, he hears a startling claim: Voss says he has been targeted because of research challenging the effectiveness of a cancer drug.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
BKA fugitive-tracking officer Georg Dengler resigns over disagreements with his superior and goes on to work as a private investigator in Stuttgart. He wants to live closer to his son, Jakob, and spend more time with him, but his very first assignment immediately gets in the way. It takes him to the federal capital, Berlin. Professor Dr. Bernhard Voss, who has made a name for himself at a Berlin university hospital for his research into rare autoimmune diseases, is accused of raping a nurse while at work. Dengler is supposed to prove Voss’s innocence, but given the evidence, he cannot imagine that his client is actually innocent. He is also suspicious because it was his former BKA boss, of all people, who recommended him for the case. At the urging of Voss’s lawyer, Lehmann, Dengler hesitates and accompanies Voss, under police guard, to an allegedly necessary medical appointment. As Dengler feared, Voss uses the examination appointment to escape. Since he knows the hospital very well, he manages to shake off the police officers. Dengler, however, is not fooled. When he catches up with Voss, he demands an explanation and learns from him that a conspiracy has been hatched against him. They want to silence him because a recent study of his called the effectiveness of a cancer drug into question, which would ruin a billion-euro business for the pharmaceutical company that manufactures it. The official final report has since disappeared, but a copy exists on Voss’s personal laptop, which he hid somewhere in the hospital. Voss asks Dengler to retrieve the laptop. First, however, the two flee the hospital, but the police pursue them, immediately launching a major manhunt and closing in on the fugitives. When Voss makes the mistake of calling his family, the two are located and arrested. Lead investigator Finn Kommareck relishes the success, as she believes she is a beneficiary of the pharmaceutical company and hopes to receive special treatment in return for her severely cancer-stricken husband. She tells Dengler that Voss died during emergency surgery and that the case is closed as far as she is concerned. Dengler is not satisfied with this. Since the laptop is no longer in its hiding place, Dengler contacts former terrorist Olga Illiescu, whom he knows from his time as an active police officer, and asks for her help. As an IT specialist, she may be able to find further evidence against the pharmaceutical lobby and possibly corrupt doctors. During their investigation, Illiescu finds information about Daniel Kommareck’s cancer and his participation in a trial of one of the disputed drugs. Dengler and Illiescu then abduct a shady pharmaceutical representative and force him to reveal his employers’ machinations. Dengler confronts the lead investigator with this, finally opening her eyes. She persuades the alleged rape victim to retract her statement, so that the pharmaceutical company is ultimately implicated and investigated.
