Full plot (contains spoilers)
Queen Isabella loves a young man without letting him know who she is. Every night she goes to see him, while her husband, Charles VI of France, sinks ever deeper into madness, surrounding himself with his court jesters. The only obstacle to the queen’s love is the Constable, a grim and stern statesman who prevents her from visiting her lover. A page who loves the queen offers himself as a sacrificial victim, pretending to be the man she loves. Put to the torture and subjected to countless torments, the young man remains silent to save the sovereign. When they lock him inside an Iron Maiden, his last words are for her, and he cries, “Long live the queen!” When Isabella sees her lover again, she finds him in the arms of another woman. Her mind begins to waver, and the queen starts groping her way through the world of madness in which her husband already lives.
