Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story is set among the minor Breton aristocracy. A young woman inherits a substantial sum of money under the will of the Marquis de Kéranic. The will stipulates that if any accident should leave the young woman dependent on others, or if she should die, her guardian would become the heir. The guardian, who is in love with his ward, whose advances she has rejected, decides to poison her and shoot her lover, whom he has previously invited in her name. Believing them dead, he leaves. But the two lovers are only wounded and drift with the current all night. The young woman emerges so shocked that she can no longer speak or do anything else. Having heard of the advances in psychoanalysis and the miracles a professor was performing with the cinematograph, they decide to call on him and recreate the scene that traumatized the young woman so that they can show it to her afterward... Film divisions: Prologue: The Will of the Marquis de Kéranic; Part One: A Summer in Brittany; Part Two: Professor Williams’s Method; Epilogue.
