A headstrong nun becomes entangled in a murder investigation after finding a body in her monastery.

The story

Sister Camilla arrives at Marienthal Monastery after being transferred there as a disciplinary measure. Soon she discovers the body of Tobias Schäfer in the chapel and encounters Svenja, a nine-months-pregnant young woman who says the dead man was the father of her unborn child. Inspector Josef Baumert leads the investigation, but Camilla’s blunt manner and involvement quickly put her at odds with him. She withholds Svenja’s presence from the inspector while trying to persuade the young woman to come forward. A blue car seen leaving the scene and the victim’s employer, Anton Boenisch, give Camilla reasons to pursue her own leads.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

At Marienthal Monastery, they are expecting Sister Camilla, who has been transferred there as a disciplinary measure. She is quite headstrong, but nevertheless lovable. Shortly after her arrival, she finds the body of Tobias Schäfer, deputy managing director of Anton Boenisch’s company, in the monastery chapel. At the scene, she encounters 20-year-old Svenja, who is nine months pregnant. The father of her unborn child is the dead man. She assures Camilla that she had nothing to do with Tobias’s death and flees. The police investigation is being led by Inspector Josef Baumert, whom Camilla immediately gets in the way of with her blunt manner. As punishment, he takes her to the station and questions her there. Camilla says she saw a blue car drive away. She conceals Svenja’s presence in the chapel from the inspector, but footprints tell him that someone else was at the scene. Camilla tries to persuade Svenja to turn herself in to the police so the matter can be cleared up, but when she goes to the village, she finds only Svenja’s father. From him, she learns that Schäfer’s employer, Anton Boenisch—who is soon to marry former pharmacist Angelique Koslowski—owns a blue car and was very likely jealous of Tobias Schäfer. Camilla immediately decides to follow up on this and goes to Boenisch’s house, where she finds a freshly washed blue car. She sneaks inside and takes a pair of shoes, suspecting they bear traces from the crime scene. On her way back, she runs into Inspector Baumert and hands him the evidence. She also tells him everything she observed. Baumert is not pleased that someone is interfering in his investigation, but he cannot help feeling some sympathy for the young nun. Although Camilla still has not told him about Svenja, the inspector soon finds out anyway. Out of fear, Svenja is hiding in a cabin in the woods, where she goes into labor. Fortunately, the nuns know about her hiding place. They help with the birth, and Svenja tells Camilla what happened in the chapel. Tobias seemed completely drunk to her; he had climbed onto the altar table in an excited state and then fallen off. It strikes Camilla as odd that he would have been drinking when he had been driving. She concludes that Tobias must have been poisoned and that jealousy must have been behind it. Inspector Baumert thinks the theory is far-fetched, but has the body tested for traces of poison anyway. It turns out that poison was indeed involved. Meanwhile, Camilla discovers a completely different motive for the crime: Angelique Koslowski is apparently a marriage swindler, and Tobias had found her out. Afraid he might thwart her plans and her marriage to the wealthy Boenisch, she silenced him. Camilla immediately sets off for Boenisch’s house to warn him, but he will not believe her. When he offers her some tea, Camilla realizes too late that Koslowski is trying to poison her too. On her way back to the monastery, she feels sick and, dizzy, nearly crashes her bicycle. Inspector Baumert finds her just in time, and she is able to be helped. Angelique Koslowski is arrested by him after he proves how she administered the poison to Schäfer.
