The story
On Heinz’s birthday, his family secretly prepares a party while he undergoes a medical checkup. After losing consciousness, he overhears his doctor say that a patient has only six to eight weeks to live and must not be told. Though the doctor says his own results are excellent, Heinz becomes convinced he is dying and sends the guests home so he can celebrate with only his immediate family. When Christine and Ines turn down his holiday suggestion to step in for Marleen at her guesthouse on Norderney, Heinz heads to the island too. The sisters soon face demanding holiday guests and a chaotic kitchen.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
It is Heinz’s birthday, and his family wants to surprise him with a party they have secretly planned. While preparations are underway, Heinz has a full checkup at his doctor’s office. Just before his blood is drawn, he loses consciousness and wakes up a little later on an examination table. From the next room, he hears the doctor on the phone telling the person he is speaking to that the patient has only six to eight weeks left, but that they must not tell him the truth under any circumstances. Heinz confronts the doctor directly, and is told in response that his results are excellent. Now convinced that he has cancer and is going to die soon, Heinz throws all the guests out of the garden when he gets home so he can celebrate with just his immediate family. Heinz suggests that they all take a holiday in the Bergisches Land, but both Christine and Ines turn him down because they have to step in at short notice for Marleen, who has fallen ill in Dubai and runs a guesthouse on Norderney. On their way there together, Ines meets Pascal Bothe at a gas station. He later turns out to be Tom, Christine’s childhood sweetheart, and she arranges a date with him. When they arrive at the guesthouse, Christine and Ines are immediately confronted with demanding guests who want to enjoy their holiday despite the circumstances. A botched dinner does not exactly win them over. Christine discovers who Pascal really is and feels betrayed and abandoned by her sister. Soon afterward, to make matters worse, a health inspector is on their backs because of the chaotic conditions in the kitchen and demands that they put it in order immediately. Meanwhile, Charlotte and Heinz also arrive on the island to give their daughters a hand. Heinz is happy to be with his family and keeps discreetly counting the days he has left. He meets up with his friend Kalli and confides that he is terminally ill. He gets the idea of setting Kalli up with Charlotte so he can be sure she will be in good hands after he dies. To carry out his plan, Heinz causes all sorts of mischief that Kalli has to deal with and that is supposed to impress Charlotte. She realizes what is going on and mistakenly worries that Heinz wants to leave her for another woman. Heinz pretends to get close to the passionate Helga and disappears with her to the beach. There, he loses consciousness and is taken to a clinic, where Kalli is admitted at the same time after Gisbert beats him up for making a move on Heinz’s wife. It turns out that Heinz is perfectly healthy and that the whole thing was a misunderstanding. Christine and Tom get back together and decide to give their relationship another try. Heinz reconciles with Charlotte. Marleen arrives at her guesthouse and thanks her replacement team for all their hard work.
