The story

Heinz Sattorius has lived a carefree life of drinking, nightlife, and romantic company, made possible by his wealthy, indulgent uncle, Captain Jonathan Frensen. When Jonathan suddenly stops supporting him, Heinz discovers that the friends attracted by his money vanish just as quickly. He struggles to find work as a dance partner or waiter and falls into despair. During an outing at Wannsee, he meets the Lehmann family, who invite him to their home. Heinz is particularly drawn to their daughter, Fritzi, and begins to see a possible new direction for his life.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Heinz Sattorius leads an exceptionally carefree life of bar-hopping, drinking bouts, and countless women. His equally kind-hearted, wealthy, and indulgent uncle, former Captain Jonathan Frensen, makes it possible for his nephew to live in luxury. Since Heinz is very free with his cash, he has plenty of friends who take him for all they can. One day, Uncle Jonathan has had enough and decides to cut Heinz off without warning. Just as quickly as the money that had been flowing freely dries up, all of Heinz’s “friends” disappear overnight, and the young man now has to figure out how to earn a living. But he has little success as either a dance partner or a waiter. Soon, he is gripped by sheer despair. One day at Wannsee, Heinz meets the Lehmann family, who have come there on a weekend outing. They hit it off, and the Lehmanns invite Heinz to their home. Heinz is especially taken with their daughter, Fritzi Lehmann. Heinz also has some luck in another respect. In his suitcase he finds a tie pin he had thought lost, which appears to be very valuable. He sells the precious item and gets several thousand marks for it, with which Heinz buys a modest country house with an attached poultry farm. Heinz intends to make it a great success together with Fritzi and her brother Wilhelm. Uncle Jonathan realizes that he did everything right, because Heinz is finally standing on his own feet, able to support himself, and has even found a respectable bride in sweet Fritzi.
