Full plot (contains spoilers)

During the Chechen war, the mothers of Russian soldiers search for their sons in the fire-ravaged city of Grozny. Local residents—children, women, and elderly people—huddle in a basement, waiting out the assault. Islam Bashirov, a medical student, came from Moscow to the war to save people. His friend Ramzan Mezhidov got a job in television as a camera operator. Ramzan was killed in a precision missile strike in 1999 while filming a column of refugees. In 1995, Ruslan Khamkhoev, a camera operator by profession, was buried. He was arrested on his way home to his wife and son, then shot.
