The story
Set in 1950s Rome, Pippo and Peppe are street musicians who travel among taverns and restaurants, and both love the same woman. After she dies, they visit her grave and leave all the votive candles they can find. They then search for her son, who is the child of one of them, and kidnap him from an orphanage. The two take the child with them and buy a hen after its seller promises it will lay an egg each day, so they can feed him. After some hesitation, they decide to call him Piripicchio.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Rome, the 1950s. Pippo and Peppe are two street musicians who go around the taverns and restaurants, and who love the same woman. When she dies, the two go to the cemetery and place on her grave all the little votive candles they can find. Then they go looking for her son, the child of one of them; they kidnap him from the orphanage and take him with them. They buy a hen whose seller assures them it will lay an egg a day, so they can give the egg to the child, whom, after some hesitation, they have decided to call Piripicchio. Time passes, and at a certain point Piripicchio falls ill and dies. Peppe and Pippo then decide to kill themselves: they get inside a sack near Tiber Island, intending to fall into the Tiber, but Gigi Proietti stops them. They then realize that Proietti, whom they thought was merely the manager of a restaurant, is actually Fate. They force him to bring Piripicchio back to life, but as Proietti goes onto Ponte Fabricio, he tells them that they will regret their choice.
