A perceived culinary slight unsettles the long-standing marriage of a couple sharing a busy household in 1930s Pozzuoli.

The story

In 1930s Pozzuoli, Peppino and Rosina Priore have enjoyed an apparently untroubled marriage for about thirty years. They share a large seaside house in the Rione Terra with their children and a bustling household of relatives, while their close friends, geologist Ianniello and his wife, live next door. After Peppino lavishly praises his daughter-in-law Maria Carolina’s Sicilian-style macaroni, Rosina regards his praise as a culinary betrayal and becomes less affectionate toward him. Their pride feeds a period of subtle, troubling marital doubts.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Pozzuoli, the 1930s. Peppino and Rosina Priore’s marriage has carried on without a hitch for about thirty years. They live in a large house overlooking the sea in the Rione Terra with their children, Rocco and Giulianella (their eldest, Roberto, is married and lives elsewhere); Grandpa Don Antonio; Aunt Amelia, nicknamed Memè, a widow who is excessively protective of her son Attilio; and Raffaele, Peppino’s brother. Their close friends are the geologist Ianniello and his wife, who live next door. To get back at her husband for a supposed “culinary betrayal” (he had praised his daughter-in-law Maria Carolina excessively for the way she had cooked Sicilian-style macaroni), Donna Rosa becomes less affectionate toward him. A period of subtle but irritating emotional doubts begins, fueled by both their pride, and comes to a head during Sunday lunch: in front of the whole family and the Ianniellos, Peppino publicly accuses Rosa of having cheated on him with the geologist, causing an uproar that, fortunately, is resolved the next day in the best possible way. The Priores rediscover their former passion, the children their relationship with their parents, and the Ianniellos their strong friendship with their neighbors.
