Three women in a depopulating Bavarian village enter a dance competition to raise money for broadband, while navigating upheavals in their personal lives.
The story
Marienzell in Lower Bavaria is losing residents and visitors, and the village has little work, no younger generation and no fast broadband. While local men try to lay a fiber-optic line themselves, farmer Lena hopes to raise €10,000 for the infrastructure by winning a dance competition in neighboring Josefkirchen. She persuades Maria and the reluctant Waltraud to join her, and their preparations gain momentum after they receive unexpected support from Jorge González. Meanwhile, each woman faces personal strains: Maria’s ex-husband is remarrying, Lena and her partner disagree about starting a family, and Waltraud feels trapped in her marriage.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Marienzell, a municipality in Lower Bavaria, is suffering from rural depopulation: people are moving away, tourists are staying away, there is no work and no younger generation. Above all, it lacks broadband internet access. There is no prospect of a fast connection. For the communications company operating in the region, investing is not worthwhile because the population is too small and the costs too high. While the men in the village try to lay a fiber-optic line into town on their own, farmer Lena sees a chance to raise the necessary funds another way: she wants to enter a dance competition in neighboring Josefkirchen and use its €10,000 prize money to help finance the infrastructure they need. Once again mocked by the conservative locals, she manages at least to persuade Maria and the hesitant Waltraud to take part. It is only when the trio accidentally receives support from Jorge González that preparations for the competition get underway in earnest. But each of the three women is also dealing with troubles of her own. Maria, who works at a spa after giving up her corner shop, has to face the fact that her ex-husband, Manni, is remarrying. Blinded by their friendly relationship, she nevertheless hopes they can start over together. But when Manni tells her that he plans to sell the house she still lives in, things between them escalate, and Maria throws him out. She finds support in Loisi, an acquaintance of hers and the local bus driver, who also turns out to be a talented amateur dancer and helps the women with their plan. Lena wants a baby with her partner, Willi, at last, but he sees no basis for starting a family given their poor financial situation. When she discovers that he would rather watch porn than sleep with her, she pulls the plug and promptly moves in with Maria, bringing her pet pig, Pauli, with her. Waltraud, meanwhile, is scraping by as a supermarket cashier and earning a little extra as an occasional hairdresser and caregiver. She increasingly feels trapped in her listless marriage to her husband, Heinz. It takes the death of Dr. Huber, whom she had been looking after, to open Waltraud’s eyes. She too then packs her bags and moves in with Maria, so she, Lena and Maria can work on their performance together. Shortly before their performance, Moni, the mayor’s wife, throws a wrench in the trio’s plans: together with two friends, she has also rehearsed a risqué routine to the song “Lady Marmalade.” Lena decides to compete alone and challenges Willi, who is also there, to dance a tango with her onstage. The audience enthusiastically applauds the couple’s improvised performance, but in the end they cannot beat the competition. However, Frau Jörgensen, head of the regional communications company, who had earlier invited Waltraud to the event, recognizes the community’s great need in the three women’s determination and consequently approves her company’s installation of fiber-optic broadband in Marienzell.
