The story

In early-1970s Bremen, police-station secretary Siggi Thieme feels underchallenged and secretly applies to join the criminal police as one of its first women. After passing the entrance exam, she faces resistance from her family and boyfriend, who do not understand her choice. Her father tries to stop her from training while she lives at home, but Siggi persists and moves into a shared flat with her friend Jutta. Her boyfriend Jürgen wants them to live together and start a family; when Siggi refuses, their relationship ends. Training proves demanding, and even her sole female colleague is initially unsupportive.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the early 1970s, Siggi Thieme works as a secretary at a police station in Bremen, where her father is also employed. Feeling underchallenged, she applies to become one of the first women in the criminal police, without telling her parents, her sister Elke, or her boyfriend Jürgen. When she passes the entrance exam and wants to begin training, they do not understand her decision. Her father wants to forbid her from training as long as she still lives at home. Siggi carries on regardless and moves into a shared flat with her friend Jutta, the only person she had told. Jürgen wants Siggi to move into a flat with him so they can start a family. When she refuses, they break up. The training is tough and demands a great deal of Siggi, including an initiation ritual. Even Thea Ritter, her only female training colleague, does not support her until late in the course. Once on the police force, Siggi is confronted with her friend, whom she has to arrest for occupying a house, and after a brawl she has to question her boyfriend. She tries to help Ramona, a prostitute, and bring her pimp, “King,” to justice, which she manages to do after several setbacks. Eventually, her father accepts her career, and she and Jürgen grow close again.
