A journalist navigating family expectations and romance scrambles to find a husband before her pregnant younger sister can marry.
The story
Hatice Coscun is a journalist living in Hamburg, largely free of Turkish culture but still carrying a little “Anatolia” in her head. When her younger sister Fatma becomes pregnant, family rules mean Fatma cannot marry until Hatice has found a husband. Hatice hopes her steady boyfriend, Stefan, will get engaged to her at a family gathering, but on the way to the quiet town of Salzgitter, the couple argue over Stefan’s odd attempts to pass himself off as a genuine Turk. The planned meal goes ahead without him. With Fatma pressing the issue and her relationship with Stefan over, Hatice persuades her gay acquaintance Gero to pretend to be her partner.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hatice Coscun lives in Hamburg as a journalist, largely free and far removed from Turkish culture. But she still has a little “Anatolia” in her head. When her younger sister Fatma becomes pregnant, Hatice has a big problem: Fatma is not allowed to marry until Hatice has found a husband too. Fortunately, Hatice has a steady boyfriend named Stefan, who is supposed to “get engaged” to her at a family gathering. But on the way to the quiet town of Salzgitter, they argue because Stefan has some rather bizarre ideas and tries to pass himself off as a genuine Turk. In doing so, he falls back on clichés. The planned meal takes place without him. When Fatma turns up the pressure, and Hatice and Stefan finally split up, Hatice persuades her gay acquaintance Gero to stand in for Stefan. But the deception is exposed when Gero gets involved with the son of the local greengrocer. Hatice’s father is disillusioned. The sisters are sure of one thing: they need to find a new man. But the search proves difficult. After a series of disappointments, just as Hatice is about to give up, she meets Hannes, who is handsome and even charming. They fall in love and begin a relationship. At the wedding of Mr. Coscun’s niece, Hannes is supposed to meet Hatice’s parents. But an important basketball game is taking place that day. On the evening before the wedding, when Hatice’s father puts pressure on her, Hatice goes to watch Hannes’s game. The team loses after Hatice distracts her boyfriend at a crucial moment. They argue, and the two break up. The next day, Hatice presents Thorsten, with whom she had an unsuccessful date, as Hannes. When the real Hannes shows up at the wedding and wants to make up with Hatice, the deception is exposed. Hatice’s father disowns his daughter. But he has reckoned without the rest of his family: together, they convince him both to take his daughter back into the family and to let Fatma marry before her. While the family is at the wedding-dress fitting, it becomes clear that Mr. Coscun already knew that Fatma was pregnant.
