A reporter stages social experiments to prove what men are really like, drawing jazz bandleader Peter Krüger into her latest ruse.

The story

Daisy, daughter of millionaire toy inventor Hellmann, works as a reporter for a women’s newspaper. Through a series of reports, she sets out to show what men are really like. Her methods have already brought police complaints for public disturbances. To test whether a man would help a beautiful female thief rather than an ugly one, she pretends to have stolen a bracelet and asks jazz musician and bandleader Peter Krüger to help her evade the police. He takes her to his hotel, where his band is playing, and finds her a job as a singer in his revue.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Daisy, the daughter of millionaire toy inventor Hellmann, is a reporter for a women’s newspaper. In a growing series of new reports, she wants to show what men are really like. For example, during a traffic accident with her boss, Karl, she counts the passersby to prove that only a woman would stop and help in such a situation. Daisy’s aunt is delighted by her niece’s journalistic zeal, while her father is less enthusiastic, especially since Daisy’s methods keep bringing fresh police complaints about public disturbances. In a new experiment, Daisy wants to prove that a man would help a beautiful female thief rather than an ugly one. She pretends to have stolen a bracelet and asks Peter Krüger, a jazz musician and bandleader, to help her evade the police. He takes her to his hotel, where his band is playing, and sets about putting the supposed thief back on the straight and narrow. She is allowed to sleep on the sofa in his hotel room, and he finds her a job as a singer in his revue. Daisy’s experiment develops further, since she can now “investigate man as a tamer,” who is more easily overcome by a woman he thinks he has “tamed.” However, Peter finds her journalistic work in a wardrobe and now wants to pay her back in kind. When Daisy makes up a story that a former partner has been released from prison and that a chain he stole has not been found, Peter announces the next day that he has been with this partner, who shot him in the arm and is now threatening to kill him. But just as Peter claims he wants to retrieve the chain so Daisy can start a new life without worry, her aunt turns up too. She has to wear the supposedly stolen necklace to the theater, where Daisy plans to steal it from her again in front of Peter’s eyes, to stop him from going astray. When Daisy’s father finds out, he wants to force her to give up her masquerade and informs the police that a theft has taken place at the theater. When Daisy steals the chain from her aunt, the police arrest her and do not believe her during questioning. In fact, it is her own chain, and the whole thing was staged solely for a newspaper article. Even her aunt and Karl abandon her, claiming not to know Daisy for fear of being imprisoned. Only the next day is Daisy released on bail, and she happens to learn that not only did Peter know who she was, but her father had sold her manuscripts for a sum in deutsche marks. She is furious and decides, in retaliation, to marry her boss, Karl. During her engagement party with Karl, she learns that Peter wanted the money in order to pay her bail. That is how Daisy and Peter end up together in the end.
