Full plot (contains spoilers)
The year is 1238. Danylo, Prince of Galicia (Danylo of Galicia), and his brother Vasylko attack a border castle belonging to a secret order. Thanks to his resourcefulness, Danylo captures the order’s grand master. The latter persuades the prince to become his ally in the fight against a powerful enemy from the east. Khan Batu attacks Rus and destroys Kyiv, just as the grand master had warned. Mobilization begins, along with the construction of fortified cities. The Galician boyars dislike this decision and are ready to reach an agreement with the khan so they can go about their own affairs in peace. Khan Batu is in no hurry to continue his advance, as he has another plan. There is a traitor among the prince’s close associates, acting in the interests of the Galician boyars and plotting against the prince and his family. When the boyars fail to persuade Danylo to cooperate, they wage war against him, hiring mercenaries. Danylo wins the war against the boyars brilliantly, but not without losses. At this point, a grand master arrives from the Pope with an offer, while Khan Batu sends the prince an ultimatum. At the same time, Danylo’s wife, Anna, dies under mysterious circumstances. To everyone’s surprise, Danylo sets off in person to negotiate with the khan. Despite the great trials he faces, fortune favors Danylo, and he returns home alive. With the grand master’s help, the prince receives a crown from the Pope and becomes the first king of Rus.
